Calligraphy Wedding Vows During COVID-19

It’s hard to imagine that life with COVID-19 started a year ago. That means a year of wearing face masks, seeing friends and family from 6 ft away and making sure you always have hand sanitizer with you.

For all engaged couples, the start of the pandemic has been synonymous with cancelling their original celebration and replanning. And replanning…and sometimes replanning again.

It has been so touching to witness the resilience of couples. As guidelines changed, couples would request Change the Dates and readjust their guest list. Throughout this process, I have been noticing a common thread: nothing could make this celebration less special for them.

As provinces slowly start to administer vaccines, we have the promise of better days ahead. However, there is still so much uncertainty for couples planning 2021 weddings. What will venue capacities be set at? What public health measures will still be in place? Will dancing be allowed?

We don’t know the answers to these questions yet. However, being flexible, communicating with your vendors and setting your priorities are key. If you are planning your wedding right now, I hope you can find moments of joy within the process.

Last year, I had the honour of writing vows for some couples who had to change their wedding plans due to COVID-19. It was a beautiful way to celebrate the love and union of these couples, despite the fact that their wedding days looked different than originally planned.

Your vows are so special and I think there is something significant about exchanging them during a pandemic. This is already such a heightened, tense time. Promising to stand by your partner in this moment, through the unknowns that life will throw at you seems particularly poignant.

So whether you got married last year or you have yet to tie the knot officially, commemorating your vows during this moment in life (a moment that I hope we never have to repeat) is so monumental.
