I love using Wallpaper Wednesdays to talk about things I’m currently struggling with. The point of this series was to share the words that have been filling me with encouragement and hope as I work through my struggles. For the past few weeks, I’ve avoided talking about the obstacles that have yet to be conquered so I think it’s time I get real with you all again!

These past few weeks, I’ve really been struggling with my creative process. What does that mean exactly? It means that I thought everything I made wasn’t good enough or that I was super anxious about delivering completed pieces to my clients or that I doubted what I was even doing running this business. Yeah, there was serious doubts going on in my head, but I just continued to create and work as usual in spite of it all.

One day, while creating some graphics for a blog post, I found this quote:

Creativity takes courage. — Henri Matisse

When I read it, it was like a brick had fallen on me. There were two things I took away from this quote:

  1. YES, creativity absolutely takes courage! No one else will ever perceive my creation the same way I do and knowing that is scary! 1+1 will always equal 2 (well, actually 1+1 doesn’t always equal 2. It depends on the number field you’re in. Weird, right? Sorry, it’s the mathematician in me!), but art will never always be one thing.
  2. Creating something takes courage. It doesn’t mean it’s not scary to put your creation out into the world. Having courage means that you still do the thing even when you’re scared to!

Whoa, that last point still really gets me. It’s almost like it gives me permission to feel fear the way that I do, but also reminds me that it’s okay to be scared. I hope it’s as freeing for you as it is for me. I made these wallpapers compatible with your mobile device so that you see it every single time you check your phone. For me, that means I see it a lot more than if it were a desktop background. And I need to be reminded so that I can continue to create in spite of my fears.
